Gatekeepers

I return to Manhattan filled with anticipation and expectations. I print my 330-page manuscript and feel its weight in my hands for the first time.

I then write what I think is the perfect query letter and send it out to fifteen handpicked agents. All fifteen reject me and Katherine. The publishing houses' gatekeepers tell me it is impossible for an unpublished writer to get published in this recession-driven marketplace.
